Embracing Community Spirit and Making a Difference

The Lunar New Year is a time to celebrate with family and community, honor culture and tradition, and spread joy. For Allison Zhang, a 10-year-old girl, this year’s festival was an opportunity to do more than celebrate. Volunteering with AYLUS Pearland Branch at the 2024 Pearland Lunar New Year Festival, she dedicated her time to selling traditional Chinese crafts to raise funds for the special needs community and various student clubs.

Allison is a quiet, soft-spoken girl. She decided to challenge herself this year by signing up to sell Panda and Dragon toys and crafts at the festival. She spent hours before the event sorting products, organizing items by type and size, and creating an inventory checklist to ensure everything was easy to locate. Her attention to detail paid off. Each product was carefully counted for and beautifully displayed at the booth, drawing the attention of many young customers. Alongside her friend Grace Chan, she greeted visitors with a warm smile, demonstrated the products, and encouraged them to support the cause. Her inventory checklist was essential for tracking sales and managing a steady flow of customers. As the day went on, she gained confidence with each interaction. And by the end of the festival, her booth achieved the highest sales among all AYLUS booths, winning first place in revenue.

Reflecting on the experience, Allison shared that the careful planning, hard work, and support from other AYLUS members were key to her booth’s success. She realized that she was more capable than she’d ever thought. Like other AYLUS members, Allison understands the importance of the initiatives, and she was thrilled that each dollar raised would benefit children with special needs. She plans to continue volunteering at the upcoming 2025 festival, hoping her story will inspire more young people to join her in making a difference.
